Caillebotte, Gustave
(1848-1894)
   painter, collector
Born in Paris, Gustave Caillebotte is known for his scenes of contemporary French urban life, especially of the Parisian upper middle class. He was a patron also of the impressionists, with whom he exhibited. His own work is characterized by its lack of sentimentality and use of the extraordinary perspectives of Paris, and especially of its boulevards. He also employed stylized and unconventional viewpoints, as in Les Raboteurs de parquet (1875). As a core member of the impressionist group, Caille-botte participated in the exhibitions of 1876, 1877, 1879, 1880, and 1882. Caillebotte began to study painting in 1872 at the studio of léon bonnat and at the École des beaux-arts. In particular, he was influenced by edgar degas, especially in technique and perspective. In 1894, he donated his own collection of 67 impressionist masterpieces to the French government, whereupon he provoked a scandal—conservatives having condemned his gift as an affront to French art. Today this great legacy forms the central part of the collection at the Musée d'Orsay.
